“What is that even supposed to mean, Aiden? You guys are confusing me.”

“Sit down, Addy.”

Alex helps me to the couch and I sit. This better be the part where they tell me what they have been up to. My anger level is at an all-time high, and since I didn’t get to rearrange Nomi’s face, I may explode.

Apparently, Aiden has drawn the short straw, or picked a number, or been voted as the triplet representative today because he steps forward while Alex and Archer stand behind him with their legs apart and their arms crossed, like some kind of mafia bodyguards. The whole atmosphere of the room is tense and awkward.

“There is no easy way to tell you what we have done,” Aiden begins.

My heart thumps hard against my ribs. The feeling of rage fades slightly, replaced by fear. I am about to lose them. This is where they tell me this has all been a joke, a mistake. Aiden turning me down was out of nobility or loyalty to whomever is now going to “pity date” me.

“Get on with it, Aiden.” My anger flares again.

The clipped tone I use has him second-guessing. “Maybe now is not a good time.”

Alex’s eyes flash with annoyance. “Do you want me to tell her?”

Aiden shakes his head and holds his hand up when Alex moves forward. “Chill, everybody, just chill.” His comment is directed to me and Alex because we are both radiating ire, as usual. One of us can’t be angry without the other getting angry.

Aiden steps closer, kneels in front of me, and finally gets down to business. “Addy, do you know how the three of us got recruited to different colleges?”

“Yes.” I really don’t have anything else to add. I am happy for them, but we have already had this discussion. Alex intends to play football for Notre Dame, Archer is going to play baseball for Duke, and Aiden will attend the University of Florida on a soccer and academic scholarship.

“Well, that has all changed.”

“What!” I am no longer mad. Instead, I worry something bad has happened. God, my emotions are all over the place. I must be PMSing.

“We have decided to all three attend the University of Florida. We don’t want to be apart.”

Genuine excitement has me grabbing Aiden and hugging him tightly. “I am so glad you guys don’t have to split up. You are going to have so much fun.”

I make a mental note to look up admission requirements for UF later.

“Wait, why were you worried about telling me that?” He said earlier, there was no easy way to tell me. To me, that indicated bad news. This is fantastic news.

“There’s more,” Archer adds. His face is tight, veiling his emotions. This can’t be good. Archer without a smile is like chocolate without sugar, no one wants that.

“Yeah, there’s more.” Aiden looks down at the floor and picks at the carpet, stalling.

When he looks back up, his eyes are hopeful.
